A STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1992
The first edition of the race took place in 1992. It was an ambitious project: to bring a high-altitude running competition beyond 4,000 meters. That year, strong winds at altitude forced the organizers to stop at Colle del Lys (4,250 m), but the seed had been planted.
From 1993 to 1996, the race reached the summit of Monte Rosa, setting a new standard for alpine competitions.
After a few years of hiatus, the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon returned in its original format in 2018 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. That edition also introduced a new rule: racing in teams of two, to ensure greater safety at high altitude.
THE 2024 EDITION AND THE SCARPA DOCUMENTARY
The 2024 edition was more than just a race — it was an opportunity to reflect on what running in the mountains truly means.
Through the documentary produced by SCARPA, we wanted to tell the story of skyrunning’s evolution and the history of the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon — but also explore the deep bond between athletes, the landscape, and the local community.
The documentary features stories from athletes, organizers, and residents of Alagna, blending race footage with behind-the-scenes moments. It's a way to bring the world of skyrunning closer, even to those who have never experienced it firsthand.
FACTS & RECORDS
The race covers approximately 35 km with over 3,500 meters of elevation gain. The route is technical, demanding, and runs largely over glacier terrain. It’s a physical challenge that requires preparation, proper equipment, and a strong focus on safety.
The course records date back to 1994: Fabio Meraldi finished in 4h24’, while Gisella Bendotti stopped the clock at 5h34’.
Since the race’s revival in 2018, it continues to attract top international athletes with increasingly impressive performances — yet those original records remain unbeaten.
WHY SCARPA SUPPORTS THE MONTE ROSA SKYMARATHON
For SCARPA, sponsoring this race means promoting a sport that puts the mountains at the center — experienced with respect, skill, and passion.
Our commitment to skyrunning was born from this very idea: creating footwear designed for high altitudes and for those who seek authentic experiences in close contact with nature.
